Neurokinex is a social enterprise and registered charity (Charity No 1169964) that provides community-based rehabilitation for people living with various forms of paralysis.
Using ground-breaking protocols and intensive activity-based rehabilitation programmes, we redefine recovery from neurological injury and illness.
Our aim is to make accessible paralysis rehabilitation a reality. We have been delivering cutting-edge rehabilitation and wellness programmes to the paralysis community for over 10 years via our three sites: Gatwick, Hemel Hempstead and Bristol.
Who We Are
Established in 2013, Neurokinex offers community-based rehab that redefines the possibilities for adults and children living with paralysis.
We are proud to be the only European affiliate of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation’s NeuroRecovery Network and work closely with universities, hospitals and organisations to innovate and push the boundaries of spinal cord injury rehabilitation.
What We Do
We know that rehabilitation from neurological injury and illness extends beyond physical capabilities and includes mental health and wellbeing, confidence and independence.
This is why our community-based approach supports individuals to maximise recovery, but also to manage long-term health and fitness, reduce the risk of hospital re-admissions and achieve independence through greater functional abilities.
Activity Based Rehabilitation
Central to our approach is Activity Based Rehabilitation (ABR), a form of intensive rehabilitation that works to re-establish impaired neural pathways and maximise functional recovery. Combining weight-bearing, balance, gait training and locomotor training, upper and lower body ergometry, strength training and various forms of electrical stimulation, the Neurokinex ABR programme aims to enable people to become stronger, fitter and more independent.
Our Protocols
Locomotor Training provides activation of the neuromuscular system below the level of lesion with the goal of retraining the nervous system to recover specific motor tasks such as those required for posture and mobility. Benefits include improved cardiovascular and pulmonary function, increased bone density, reduced spasticity, decreased skin lesions and improved glucose tolerance. It is typically delivered using body weight support systems over a specially adapted treadmill and is precise and personalised.
Wide Pulse Stimulation is a form of electrical stimulation used to activate muscles superficially while stimulating increased central activation. The therapy comprises placing electrodes on the skin over the corresponding muscles associated with functional movement, with the participant consciously working alongside the stimulation.
ARC-EX Therapy
The ARC Ex System is designed to be used in a rehabilitation centre setting while clients practice tasks of daily living that help enable movement.
As the first organisation in the UK approved to use this therapy, we are at the forefront of its delivery.
This non-invasive spinal cord stimulation system for people with a chronic cervical spinal cord injury is indicated to improve hand sensation and strength.
Clients regaining function and sensation using this rehab protocol range from those who have recently been injured right up to individuals who were injured over 35 years ago.
Neurokinex is uniquely placed to deliver this therapy having spent nearly a decade collaborating with academic institutions, clinical groups and industry partners on spinal stimulation research and innovation.
The Pathfinder clinical research pilots conducted at our centres using ONWARD Medical’s devices saw participants achieve meaningful improvements.
Our Funded Schemes
We have several funded schemes to help adults and children access our rehabilitation sessions.
- The Step Up Scheme awards six sessions to newly injured or diagnosed clients referred by the NHS. The service is a lifeline for many, providing access to rehabilitation that can have life-changing results.
- Our Stroke Scheme offers a 60-minute assessment and 60-minute trial rehab session following NHS referral for the early stages of recovery from a Stroke.
- The Young Brain Injury Fund provides 10 one-hour sessions of activity-based rehabilitation for individuals under the age of 30 with a brain injury.
Our Mission
At Neurokinex we believe that everyone has a right to accessible rehab and strive to make community-based neurological rehabilitation a reality for all who need it.
We remain committed to advancing scientific progress in spinal cord injury rehabilitation and redefining possibilities for people living with paralysis.
