Brain injury neuro-rehab
service rated ‘Good’ by CQC

Richardson Care’s long-term community neuro-rehabilitation service has been rated ‘Good’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

The CQC inspected the service at 144 Boughton Green Road, Northampton in July and found the care to be ‘Good’ in all of the following areas: Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, Well-led.

144 Boughton Green Road is a specialist long-term neuro-rehabilitation service for males, providing a stable home environment within a community setting. It is suitable for males who have a diagnosis of acquired brain injury, associated cognitive difficulties and co-morbid conditions. The focus is on long-term rehabilitation and behaviour/risk management to enhance quality of life and develop daily living skills.

Individuals’ choice and control over their care

The service at 144 Boughton Green Road was commended for supporting service users to make choices, and scored 3 out of 4 under the section ‘Independence, choice and control’.

The CQC wrote in its report: “People were supported to have choice and control over their own care. People told us they were supported to undertake activities they wanted to do. One person told us about going to stables to assist with horses, another told us about going fishing and to the theatre. Each person chose what holiday they wished to go on each year.

"We saw staff offering choices of meals to people and checking with them whether they wanted to go out. People were able to choose where they spent their day.

“One person talked about the arrangements made with him to meet his mother. Relatives told us they could visit when they liked and their loved-one could be supported to visit them if they wished to. One relative said, ‘Anytime, the staff will bring [loved-one] down to see me, like on Mother’s Day. They have also brought them down for a holiday.’

Promoting independence

The team was also praised for promoting independence, with the CQC reporting: “We saw in people’s care records there was an emphasis on supporting and encouraging people to do things for themselves, such as brushing their teeth. The aim of the service is to promote independence as much as possible.”

Dedicated staff team

144 Boughton Green Road is run by Registered Manager, Jaymee-Leigh Clancy with a dedicated team of staff, many of whom have been working at the service for over 10 years. This means that they have a thorough understanding of the complexities of the service users, promoting stability.

Jaymee-Leigh is committed to providing service users with opportunities to follow their interests. This supports their mental well-being and their long-term rehabilitation. She says: “The best part of my job is the service users. They’re great. I love seeing them happy and enjoying themselves so much. That’s why I’m here. I want to make a difference.”

Jaymee-Leigh continues: “I’m passionate about providing person-centred care, enabling the guys to choose activities that they actually want to do. They really love the armchair exercises and music enrichment sessions that we have in the home each week. Some of the service users go and support Northampton at rugby or football matches, go to exhibitions, the theatre or cinema. All the guys have different interests and it’s a fairly stable population.

"However, we had a new admission recently and it’s been great to see him come out of his shell and join in with the other guys. They encouraged him to take part in the music sessions and he really enjoyed it. He also went to an Elvis exhibition in London with another service user and had a really good time”

The Registered Managers, support and care staff are supported by an experienced multi-disciplinary team of neuro specialists. The MDT provide input for care plans, deliver therapy and are available for on-going support.
