Brain injury care home approved to open in northern England

A specialist brain injury rehabilitation care home has received planning approval in South Tyneside.

The plans have been approved for the erection of the building at the site of the former Working Men’s Club – a currently vacant piece of land near Brockley Terrace in Boldon Colliery, according to the Shields Gazette.

The plans received a unanimous approval from councillors.

According to the publication, the plans were put forward by Voyage Care last year, seeking full planning permission for a two-storey building, along with twelve transitional living apartments, supporting residents with personalised care plans.

The Gazette reports that Councillor Shirley Ford, Green Group representative, said: “I welcome a lot of the aspects of this, it’s a care home, clearly we need more care homes particularly for this specific purpose.”

Councillor Andrew Guy of the South Tyneside Alliance Group said: “I used to walk home along that street many times and that building, it was good to have it pulled down, but it’s often when a building is pulled down and it’s left, it’s not the end, it’s still that sort of eyesore.

“I think this development here actually adds value to the local area, and as Cllr Ford said, we do need more care homes and care facilities.”
